Are All Headlights the Same?

The purpose of headlights is to illuminate the area into which you are driving at night. Headlights also offer a signal to other drivers of your existence on the road. Researchers seem to come up with new headlight designs every decade.

The most common headlight is the halogen headlight. The halogen headlight contains nitrogen and argon gas surrounding a tungsten filament. The gas amplifies the light source. These headlights have a proven record of reliability and are still in demand for older vehicles.

The High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlight made its first appearance in the 1990s as a BMW innovation. HID headlights contain a mixture of gases and rare metals that generate an intense white light tinged in blue.

LED headlights are gaining in popularity due to their energy economy properties. Cars that use LED lights have power left over for other electronic devices.
